"I CAN show you the world." - Aladdin
"Aladdin," 1992 is a Walt Disney animated musical fantasy featured film that was released on November 25, 1992. The film was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, and is based on the Arab-style folktale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp from "One Thousand and One Nights." "Aladdin" won two Academy Awards; one for Best Music, Original Song Alan Menken (music), Tim Rice (lyrics), for the song "A Whole New World," and the second for Best Music, Original Score, Alan Menken. The voice
cast featureed Scott Weinger as Aladdin, Robin Williams as the Genie, Linda Larkin as Princess Jasmine, Jonathan Freeman as Jafar, Frank Welker as Abu, Gilbert Gottfried as Iago, and Douglas Seale as The Sultan.
Early work by the Disney animators based their designs for the characters on the work of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, and computers were used for both finishing the artwork and creating some animated elements. In the earliest stages of the story, Aladdin was portrayed as a boy, as opposed to a young man. Aladdin animator Glen Keane, and directors Ron Clements and John Musker liked the idea, however executive producer, Jeffrey Katzenberg did not. He felt the romantic relationship between a meek Aladdin and the beautiful Princess Jasmine would not be viewed as unrealistic, because Jasmine wouldn't find herself physically attracted to a boyish Aladdin. Glen Keane redesigned Aladdin to be more muscular, with broad shoulders, and more defined features. However, to keep in line with the original concept, Keane, Musker, and Clements retained a sense of youth and innocence to Aladdin through his facial features and character portrayal. Lead animator for Princess Jasmine was Mark Henn, and when he was looking for inspiration, he used his sister Beth's high school photograph as a starting point.
This is a rare and important drawing from the opening sequence of "A Whole New World" song that won the Oscar in the Best Music Original Song category. Both Aladdin and Princess Jasmine are eyes open and Jasmine is smiling as they both are flying on the Magic Carpet. Aladdin is singing the word "CAN," which is the opening line to the song "A Whole New World." "I CAN show you the world," sings Aladdin to Princess Jasmine.
