Original Production Animation Cel of The Minstrel from "Sleeping Beauty," 1959
Original hand painted and hand inked production animation cel The Minstrel set on a lithographic background from "Sleeping Beauty," 1959, Walt Disney Studios; Size - Minstrel: 6 1/4 x 7", Image 7 x 10"; Unframed.
This delightful cel from Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (1959) features the court minstrel enjoying a moment of cheerful indulgence. Holding a gold goblet filled with wine in his right hand, with his lute resting prominently in front of him, he appears decidedly pleased with himself. His heavy-lidded eyes, crooked smile, and gently tilted head suggest that he has enjoyed more than a single drink, capturing the understated visual humor that makes this supporting character so memorable.
The minstrel’s elaborate costume adds to the image’s appeal. His voluminous green sleeves, bright yellow-green tunic, and bold orange accents create a lively arrangement of shapes and colors. A tall green hat crowned with a sweeping orange feather emphasizes his theatrical appearance, while his angular features and neatly shaped hair complement the film’s distinctive medieval-inspired design. The lute’s warm brown tones provide an attractive contrast to his colorful clothing, and its diagonal placement lends movement to the composition.
The character provides comic relief during the castle sequence involving King Stefan and King Hubert, whose plans for their children’s marriage become increasingly animated over wine. As the kings celebrate, argue, and reconcile, the minstrel quietly enjoys the refreshments himself. His tipsy behavior offers an amusing counterpoint to their royal bluster, demonstrating how Disney’s animators could establish a supporting personality through expressive poses and small gestures.
With its raised goblet, prominently displayed lute, and wonderfully satisfied expression, this image captures the minstrel’s charm in a single pose. The richly colored figure stands out against the pictured stone castle interior, evoking the festive atmosphere of the royal court and the humor woven throughout Sleeping Beauty.
